I was recently reading a book by John C. Maxwell that had a section talking about President Ronald Reagan and his great communication skills. A couple of the quotes struck me as particularly telling of the knack Reagan had for winning habitancy over. Maxwell talked about how after a debate with the sitting President Jimmy Carter, Reagan was asked if he was nervous. Reagan replied with, "No, not at all. I've been on the same stage with John Wayne." Humor and belief made habitancy accept Reagan easily; it was a great political tool. Unfortunately, few habitancy today have that same ability, but it is a skill that can be learned.
In 1981, President Reagan was shot by John Hinckley, and even in this trying and actually scary time for the President he used humor to take the edge off of the moment. Maxwell quotes Reagan as telling the doctors that were about to operate on him, "Please assure me that you are all Republicans." One of the doctors reportedly responded to the President, "Today, Mr. President, we're all Republicans." Of course there is some debate on either or not this conversation ever transpired, but the mere fact that habitancy attribute Reagan with coming up with a line like that in a life threatening situation speaks volumes of his communication skills. It is believable, because of his natural skills.
John Wayne Quotes
Another humorous, but telling quote that Reagan is attributed as saying is, "Government always finds a need for anything money it gets." other humorous fiscal quote by the late President was, "Government does not solve problems; it subsidizes them." The late President Reagan often used beloved quotes to bring a laugh to people, being a previous actor it must have come naturally. It was reported that on one occasion, while Reagan was in the operating room after being shot by Hinckley a nurse asked him how he was doing. His reply was, "All in all, I'd rather be in Philadelphia." That line was originally attributed to W.C. Fields.

There are by all means; of course lessons to be learned from the late President Ronald Reagan. Studying his communication style actually can make the aspiring leader or politician a great communicator. Fantasize the inspiration Reagan brought to habitancy when he exclaimed, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" Having the capability to inspire habitancy makes Reagan a worthy teacher, regardless of your political affiliation.
