JohnWayne is one of the most representative actors of the wild west genre of movies, and with good reason. Born Marion Robert Morrison on May 26, 1907 in Winterset, Iowa, JohnWayne is one of the most emblematic actors of the 20th century, and played some of the most important roles in the story of Western movies. While most of his movies were fiction, he also did some roles based on true stories and played a wide collection of roles ranging from cowboys to soldiers.

Stagecoach, released in 1939, was Wayne's breakthrough as a predominant star on the film industry, specially relevant after his time doing low budget westerns. It was not an easy task: The film was rejected by all major studios, until John Ford managed to strike a deal with Walter Wanger, an independent producer, and got Claire Trevor to act as lead actress. She would work with Wayne many more times later on, on some of the most well remembered performances including The High and the powerful which got her an Oscar nomination. Despite those first problems, the film was a success among the critics and the public, and JohnWayne became a movie star.
But the era of black and white was coming to an end, and colour films were becoming popular. In 1941 Wayne starred his first colour film, Shepherd of the Hills, alongside Harry Carey, the first of a long occupation that spanned over 150 films and roughly half a century.
The school uniform has a fairly short and somewhat chequered history. For all practical purposes, school uniforms as we know them today have their roots in the British collective school system. For the sake of clarity, a British collective school is equivalent to an American secret school, and an American collective school is equivalent to a British State school.
Up until the middle part of the 19th century, British collective schools were the keep of a wealthy elite, the later mandarins of the British Empire. Nevertheless, they were quite disorderly, with students behaving much as they wished. Uniform began to be introduced as a means of instilling a greater degree of discipline and team spirit, and rapidly gained acceptance within the collective school system. Quite remarkably some of these uniforms still remain relatively unchanged today.

From that time, right through until the 1960's school uniform was practically universal in the United Kingdom.
The American taste is something of a contrast. School uniform (except in Catholic or parochial schools) was virtually unknown. Many schools had dress codes, which were exclusive rather than prescriptive. Blue jeans and high heels, for example might be banned, but pupils were not told what they must wear.
This is exactly the ideas that our proponent of school uniforms described as being started in her school at South Houston in the late 1950's, and to which she ascribes a subsequent necessary correction in discipline and grades.
In 1996, President Clinton instructed the then Secretary for study Richard W Riley to send a manual on School Uniforms to every School District in the country. The manual set out the Government's position, creating guidelines for all schools on which they could model their uniform requirements. The Government view was that the adoption of school uniform would cut violence and indiscipline in schools, but did not go as far as manufacture uniform mandatory, the decision being left to personel school districts.
The view of the Government was clearly not shared by parents, pupils or the school districts' administrators. By 1998, only 11% of collective Elementary Schools had adopted a uniform policy, and by 2000, that figure had only increased to 15.5%.
The decisions to adopt uniform were not consistent across the country.
Suburban schools had a relatively lower rate of uptake, maybe reflecting the efforts of a more highly politicised group of parents.
The proponents on either side of the debate about school appear to have entrenched and practically polar opposite opinions, and there is a fog of statistics and counter-statistics available to keep either proposition.
Are they in fact useful in improving discipline and motivation_ I believe so, and the taste at South Houston suggests that I am right!
The staff reported a necessary decrease in violence and indiscipline, and an average across the board increase of two grades in schoraly carrying out by the end of the year within which a uniform policy was introduced. Could it just be co-incidence? It seems hardly likely.
There is no doubt that when a school adopts a uniform policy, it is sending a clear and unequivocal message to parents and students alike. It is saying that this is an inclusive organisation where everybody is seen to be equal, and will be treated as such. School is about learning, not about showing off or scoring fashion points.
Some people would have us believe that children hate uniforms -indeed, many children will say so themselves, but the facts belie this opinion. Children, when they join an organisation with a uniform, just can't wait to get into it.
Most of us have an innate need to belong, to feel part of a group, to feel appropriate and understood by our peers, and if inherent to have their admiration and respect. This does not just apply to children; it applies to the members of your local episode of Hell's Angels aware.
Of course, one of the unavoidable marks of a various group is its uniform.
When you supply a child with a uniform, you are giving him an instant key to acceptance within a group, the opening to belong to it and feel part of it.
Those who oppose uniform will say that by putting a child into uniform, you are taking away his constitutional right to relaxation of expression. Nevertheless, isn't it attractive to note that left to themselves, children will to a greater or lesser degree pick a uniform of their own. These may not be identical in detail, but just look at any group of youngsters, and what do you see? Brand X shoes, Brand Y jeans, baseball hat on backwards - or droopy pants! So much for free expression!
According to Warren, "With over thirty years of decline in a basic comprehension of, and appropriate for, what is appropriate in gentle society, though, school uniforms may be what are required to try to restore to our kids some sense of dignity, self-respect, respect for education, and awareness of what's appropriate where." 1
The institute of a uniform can be such that it does not preclude the expression of individuality by permitting the low key use of buttons and badges.
Furthermore, if students clearly see that they cannot express their individuality through wearing extreme styles of clothing, they are much more liable to try to do so through their achievements.
The wearing of uniform and identification with the group has some other subtle benefits which have been cleverly exploited by the military for centuries. Primarily, group membership and wearing of the uniform bring with them a sense of loyalty to the group. It is unacceptable to let the group down, or to bring it into disrepute. The same spirit that works in the infantry squad works in the classroom too - "together we can do it!"
It is attractive therefore that many of those who prize individuality so highly fail to consideration this highly observable phenomenon, without which our armed military would be worse than useless.
A necessary part of the science of mind of group membership and identity is the feeling of safety that comes from not being identifiably strange or 'different'.
It is well understood that in community and in school, the child who is 'different' is the one who is picked on, harassed or bullied. A well designed school uniform removes at least some of the descriptive signs of 'difference' immediately.
The Fort Wayne School Year says "Uniforms, with all students finding the same, can instill a sense of school togetherness. Just as a uniform solidifies a sports team or collective service providers, such as police officers, it provides a link to others in your school community. That can make you feel like you're part of a bigger picture, rather than standing out in a big school." 2
There is also economic advantage to be gained from a uniform policy. Where a policy is in place, there is no longer the pressure on the parent to by the newest fad footwear for example, or whatever the accessory of the moment might be. For the pupil, the likelihood of being perceived as poor, or having unsuccessful parents is obviated, and the connected stigma avoided.
When the need to compete materially with fellow pupils is removed, the child's mind is more likely to be focused on his education, achieving for himself and the group. In this situation once again, the interest of the personel is not totally subordinated to that of the group, but is integrated into it and enhanced by it.
A small but necessary psychological advantage results from having a uniform policy - it removes the need for both parent and child to conclude what to wear to school, whereby arguments, stress and anger can be avoided.
There is imagine to believe that school uniforms can have an impact on safety in the school environment. Even at the most simplistic level, whatever who does not belong in the school can be fast identified and checked out. The opposite is, in fact, the case. There is a time input into creating a policy, but the input to that task should involve parents, students and non schoraly staff as well as teachers. Once the policy is in place, teaching staff do not have to spend time being ´dress police´, choosing either or not a skirt or a pair of baggy pants is too short, and then having to succeed up on the counseling and disciplinary issues that may ensue.
More than ten years on from the Us Governments initial effort to promote school uniforms, the seminar rages on. Both sides furnish statistics to keep their view.
Unfortunately most of the statistics available are flawed in one way or someone else 'perhaps because the populations use to create their results, or because of faults in the statistical method.
It has been suggested that there is "No clear evidence that uniforms had any necessary impact on improving achievement, only scattered anecdotes."
If these scattered anecdotes came from those in a position to monitor performance, they probably have some substance. Without resorting to pure statistics, let us for a moment consider the British experience. Although there are major cultural and demographic differences between the Us and the Uk, for the most part we share tasteless aspirations and values, a tasteless language and an ardent desire for our study systems to work well.
The fact is that collective schools in the Uk have had uniform policies in place for years. The incidence of murder, gang culture, drug use, violent crime, bullying and normal indiscipline in Uk schools is far lower than in our American schools, and the major difference in the systems is the prevalence of uniform policy. It just works.

Second - come to the closing that all things doesn't need to get done. One of my favorite quotes, who I forget who wrote it says "There's nothing worse than doing something that never needed to be done at all." You know those things on your list that if you let go the world wouldn't stop, and quite indeed nobody would even notice. Yep, that's right - the world will not fall apart. It's all the time extraordinary when you perceive that. See what you can let go of, maybe for a day, a week, or good yet - forever.
Next - eliminate distracters. either it's email checking, Facebook, laundry, or your kids. It's prominent to set aside time for each action and not let other things encroach upon your scheduled time. Currently I've posted a note on my computer that says "I am free to let my email go." - Meaning I can break free from the long-held pattern (from my mortgage processing days) that I don't need to hit "Send and Receive" every twenty seconds. - The world will survive.
Stop multi-tasking. I hate to say it, because this is a skill we used to add to our resume. "Great multi-tasker." Boo - this is a terrible thing. Focus on what thing at a time and then unblemished it all the way before animated on to the next thing. If I'm in my email or in Facebook this distracts me from giving that one, most prominent thing my full attention, production it take Twice as long to finish. I promise, this single-handedly can change your day!
Lastly - generate systems. Run your company like a business, generate systems for everything, and then corollary them. This will help you find things faster, unblemished what you start, and ensure that all things is done correctly.

This customary quote has haunted me throughout all my years of coaching, and I imagine I am not alone. In case you are reading this and have no idea, where this quote came from let me give you a dinky background. The saying "Winning isn't Everything...it's the Only thing" has for over 45 years been attributed to the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers football team, the man for whom the Super Bowl trophy is named; the great Vince Lombardi. News flash: he never said it; what he did say is "winning isn't all things -but wanting to win is." The misquote comes from a Hollywood output starring JohnWayne and Donna Reed, titled "Trouble Along the Way" (Warner Brothers 1953) that was filmed in black and white and was a story in which Wayne plays a coach and a single parent with a daughter at a underground Catholic college and Donna Reed a group worker concerned about the child. In the film, a game is being played while Donna Reed and the dinky girl are up in the stands watching in a scene. The scene shifts between shots of the Duke pacing along the sideline barking out plays and getting his team fired up, then to a combine of priests waving the school colors and ultimately to Donna Reed and the dinky girl who looks to be about 10-12 years old. Donna Reed is commenting to the girl about how she hopes the boys are enjoying the game and giving their all or something like that, when the dinky girl responds back with the line...."well you know what father (so and so) always says...."Winning isn't all things it's the only thing." This line came from a Hollywood output out of the mouth of a 10-year-old fictional character. Some how this line got attributed to Vince Lombardi ( some say due to his religious affiliation with the Catholic church) and he spent the rest of his life right down to his last days attempting to definite that mistake with sports commentators and writers.
I imagine like many others, that this kind of thinking, that winning is the only thing, has dominated many a coach and parent's way of looking at sports competition, and when our children, our school's team, or we are not winning at every contest then there must be something wrong. Is it possible that something else is being gained that for the occasion neither I the parent nor I the coach can grasp in my occasion of temporary setback? It is the understanding of winning all the time that is so in grained in our society that we do all kinds of things along with ignoring our higher sense of self to perform it. At times, we are willing to do "whatever it takes" even if it means not doing the right thing. Confused yet? Of policy you are because unfortunately, once we take off the mind set that "winning is all things "we are forced to look someplace else for the real purpose of these competitions. In looking, the write back I have discovered is not in my head. It lies truly in the heart with a capital H, and, I will come back to that in a minute.

The goals of which are not to annihilate or destroy opponents but to honor, respect and love them. The realization being that without an opponent the artist does not have anyway to demonstrate the skills he has mastered. The competition is based on both opponents demonstrating their best, giving 100% and enjoying the opening to compete. It is not in the winning or losing but in the competitive that the athlete/artist is able to demonstrate his level of mastery. Vince Lombardi's correction of the predominant misquote "Winning isn't everything-but wanting to win is." Has a very subtle but powerful disagreement from winning is the only thing. That disagreement lies in the power of our attentiveness and intention. Why share in an activity unless you do it to the best of your ability? Our intention should always be to do our best to win or succeed, however if on any given day we do not have the outcome we would prefer we are not meant to take that personally. We give our best, learn from our mistakes and naturally get better as we grow. I have a personal motto that goes like this: "Make it personal; don't take it personal." What I mean by that is I want to do things to the best of my ability, I want to personally make it my business to give all that I can, while at the same time, remembering that if I follow or fail it is not a real reflection of who I truly am, it is just the follow of the best of my efforts at that time.

I can remember a number of times in my coaching career and my parenting careers, when my son and I both learned lessons while his days as a peewee flag football player. One season, he was drafted onto a team that could not win a game. He would complain on our rides home and at one point told me, he did not want to play anymore. I understood his pain, having been there as a coach and player myself, but also knew that there would be some value in persisting and following straight through with what he had committed to doing. After much argument and persuasion on my part, he agreed to stop the season and to naturally give his best no matter what the score was in any given game. His team never did win a single game in the regular season, but lo and behold, a small miracle did occur. When it came time for the playoffs, his team was able to be thriving at the two most foremost games of the year. That is right; they won the semi final and the championship games. I took the opening to point out to my son that had he quit, he would have missed out on being a champion. We also discussed how you never of course know how things might turn out if you keep your commitments and your word and just give your best.
Earlier I mentioned a Hollywood movie that produced a very risky and unrealistic concept. Hollywood has also produced some very overwhelming and overwhelming stories to inspire us as well. I recently watched "Friday Night Lights" another movie about football. It is all about the extremely competitive game of Texas High School football. The best part was the scene in the locker room at half time of the "big game" when Coach Gary Gaines starts talking about "Being Perfect", the team's context for the season. He starts by telling the players to just forget about what is on the scoreboard, to forget about winning, and just go back out on the field to give their best, to give their all for each other and to do it with love in their hearts, and a sense of joy for playing the game. He tells them how much he loves each of them and models for them what he hopes they have learned...If they play the game to the best of their ability, and for all the right reasons, the final score is not their reward; the feeling they leave with will be. We are all looking for, the write back we find in our Heart with a capital H. This real answer. In the game of football or the game of life, if we play full out, giving our best and loving what we do, there will only be winners and champions no matter what the scoreboard says. Playing the game for all the right reasons is the key.
Finding and understanding the right reasons to compete was and is the biggest challenge I face on a daily basis no matter what the task. I live in this world of duality and by nature; I prefer only half of what makes up my perception of reality. I only want to win, I only want happiness etc. The qoute is the more attached I am to what I want, the more I also become attached to their opposites. Reality is a dual edged sword. The write back to this puzzle is in not being attached, but rather to play the game from your heart and not your head. You see, it is your head and your ego that sees and experiences the duality and it is your head that creates the preferences based on all the facts it has collected over a lifetime of living in this world of opposites. It is your head that will take the winning and losing personally; your heart on the other hand will just go with the flow feeling the joy and love of naturally playing the game. It is love that takes you back to the game-time and time again-whether you are winning or losing. In other words, Love isn't everything...it is the only thing. Winning is a happy byproduct.
A few years ago, while I was as an assistant coach at the high school level; I was listening to our head coach talk to the players at halftime of a varsity basketball game. He told them that in order to be winners they would have to work hard, play smart, have fun and do it together. I found that to be very good advice. And as I was listening to him speak these ideas, it dawned on me that before anything would ever want to commit to all the hard work it takes to win, something else would need to be gift as well. The imagine we become real winners and champions in sports and in life, is in general that - aside from committing to the hard work, the playing smart, the fun etc. - we have to truly love what we are doing.
If we love what we are doing, it is far easier to put in the work, rebound from the losses and show up to play the game over and over again. As it turns out, when you search for the mindsets and hearts of true champions (whether in sports or in life) what you see and hear from them is how much they love it. anything the "it" is for them. All great champions have this as the basis for participating in their chosen endeavors. All great people have learned to play the game from their heart and naturally use their head as a compass-a tool to navigate their way to success. This is the most necessary lesson, sports and competition has taught me. This is the most necessary chapter we can teach our young athletes. "Winning isn't everything-it's loving what you do that means everything."
